Abstract; The present study was carried out to clarify the nursery function of the mud tidal area for fishes. Fish samples for demersal periods and pelagic were collected with a beam trawl (width 1.5m; mesh size 2mm) and a larvae net (diameter 1.0m; mesh size 0.5mm), respectively, at inner part of Ariake Bay from May 2002 to September 2003. As a result, compared between common species distributed widely and endemic species within Japan, the latter tended to depend on tidal zone of the river or tidal flat as a nursery ground.
