Abstract; To evaluate the importance of estuary as nursery ground for fish in Ariake Bay, we investigated physical environments (temperature, salinity, turbidity and velocity) and fish larvae and juveniles fauna at six areas (Isahaya Bay, the open area of bottom part, Shiota, Rokkaku. Hayatsue and Kikuchi estuaries). Physical environments of three estuaries (Shiota, Rokkaku and Hayatsue) differed from those of Isahaya Bay and the Kikuchi estuary. Species number and density of the estuaries were much more and higher than those of Isahaya Bay and the open area of the bottom part. Dominant species in three estuaries (Shiota, Rokkaku and Hayatsue) were similar each other, but differed from the Kikuchi estuary, because the endemic and semi-endemic species used almost only the estuaries in the bottom part, where high turbidity water mass and velocity were developed, as nursery ground.
