| Abstract; There was a little information about migratory histories of the Japanese temperate bass (Lateolabrax japonicus) juveniles in brackish water areas of the Chikugo River estuary of the Ariake Sea. Prior to field applications of stable isotopes as a practical tracer for migratory histories, a diet-switch experiment was conducted to know the patterns of isotopic changes in tissues of the juveniles. Secondly, to ascertain the existence of distinctive values in particular salinity ranges, stable isotope ratios of important prey species for the juveniles were compared between lower (<10) and higher (>10) salinity areas in the Chikugo River estuary. Finally, stable isotope ratios in tissues of the juveniles were analyzed and their migratory histories were reconstructed. It was revealed that most of the juveniles which immigrated into the estuary in March stayed in the lower salinity area until July, and their distribution expanded to both lower and higher salinity areas in August.
