| Abstract;Ago quarter a century, a nursery ground for fishes, especially the endemic fishes (within Japan), had existed for certain, but completely disappeared in Isahaya Bay after construction of the estuarial barrier dam. Of huge tidal flat areas widening along coastal Ariake Bay, larvae and juveniles of the endemic fishes are aggregated only in estuarial tidal flat areas of bottom part of the bay, which have environment of brackish, high turbidity and high tidal velocity. This environmental feature was found only in the Honmyo estuary of Isahaya Bay formally other than waters around the bottom part of the bay (chiefly the Rokkaku, Hayatsue and Chikugo estuaries). Hence, severing between the Honmyo River and Isahaya Bay by the barrier dam means lacking another important nursery ground for fishes in Ariake Bay. (author abst.) |
